The classic among cultivation systems
The spindle
Like every industry, the nursery sector is constantly evolving. New cultivation systems are produced, patented, and promise a higher cost-benefit factor, better yields, or higher quality. However, our nursery Vitafruit nursery, however, relies on tradition, as the tried and tested system, the spindelsustainably delivers the best result in all factors.
The spindle is the traditional cultivation system that we usually see in apple and pear orchards in the vast valley basins of South Tyrol. It consists of a single stem from which the various shoots then sprout and flourish. Consequently, a central shoot forms the fruit axis with strong branches whose length becomes shorter and shorter towards the top.
The advantages of the spindle
What are the advantages of the spindle? Well, it has proven itself as a classic cultivation system for a good reason. And especially in a region like South Tyrol, where fruit growing with apples and pears has a long history, people know exactly why they rely on this tried and tested system.
The four primary factorsfactors that distinguish the spindle from other cultivation systems are:
- The good, long-lasting constant yield.
- Its longevity.
- Very easy to work with.
- It can be adjusted according to variety.
- The cultivation system has proven itself over decades.
The spindle: long-lasting, high-yielding, coordinated, and proven cultivation system.
First of all, it is essential to emphasise its longevity: A spindle has a lifespan of 10 years on average but can easily reach 20 years. The fruit tree bears fruit as early as the second year and comes to its full size after three to four years. If the tree is well cared for, it can eventually yield 20-30 kilos of fruit per spindle.
Of course, these factors depend on the particular characteristics of the growing area. When establishing an orchard, sea level, fertility of the soil, the variety, and the growth habit have to be taken into account. So the numbers may vary, but the spindle, in particular, achieves these reliably even in deviating conditions.
